Countless people have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey and many relief organizations (and individuals!) are on the ground lending a helping hand. Texas is home to a sizable Orisha community, and Oloshas United (a national organization with 501(c)3 status) is focusing on helping those specifically within our community whose lives have been turned upside down by this devastating natural disaster.
I am not a member of Oloshas United, but I certainly respect the work they’re doing to educate and support people. They are accepting donations that will go directly into the hands of those who need it. Unlike when you donate to larger relief organizations, 100% of what you donate to Oloshas United will be used to help victims on the ground who are members of the Orisha community in Houston. I lived through Hurricane Sandy in New York; the school where I teach still runs on a generator, and many of my students continue to be misplaced nearly five years later. I understand all too well that media coverage ends far sooner than people and their communities heal.
